Newcastle submit improved offer for defender keen on Prem move

Newcastle have made an improved offer for Lille defender Sven Botman, with it being unclear how the French club will reply.

The Dutch defender has been linked with the Premier League strugglers ever since they were taken over by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, making them the richest club in world football.

Non-league football is enjoying a surprising post-lockdown renaissance

Botman started his career in the famous Ajax academy before joining Lille in a deal worth around £7.5 million at the beginning of the 2020-2021 season.

The defender made an immediate impact for his new club, making 37 appearances as Lille shocked Paris Saint-Germain to lift the Ligue 1 title.

The Athletic are now reporting that the Magpies have made a new and improved offer for Botman as they look to secure Premier League safety.

The report claims that Lille are ‘determined’ to keep hold of the 21-year-old, especially as they take on Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16 stage.

However, the report continues that if Newcastle’s offer is ‘strong enough’ then the French champions could be forced into a sale due to their financial situation.

Botman is reportedly keen on a Premier League move.

Newcastle’s offer for Botman signals a clear sign of intent from manager Eddie Howe as he looks to improve the club’s defence.

The club announced England defender Kieran Trippier as the first signing of the new era on Tyneside as the 31-year-old completed his £12 million move from Atletico Madrid.

The former Burnley and Tottenham man voiced his delight at completing his move back to the Premier League before admitting there is a lot of work to do.

He said: “I’m delighted to be joining this fantastic club. I really enjoyed my time in Madrid, but when I became aware of interest from Newcastle United, and having worked with Eddie Howe before, I knew this was where I wanted to be.

“I’m aware there is a lot of work ahead of us, but I know the demands of Premier League well and I know what an amazing club this is with very talented players. I can’t wait to get started and I’m excited to step out at St James’ Park as a Newcastle player.”
