Newcastle ‘weighing up a move’ for £20m Lyon striker

Newcastle United are interested in signing Lyon striker Moussa Dembele in January, according to reports.

The Magpies will be desperate to improve in the winter transfer window as they aim to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

They are currently 19th in the table having only won one of their 18 league encounters this campaign.

Tottenham might cost England a Champions League place…

Eddie Howe will be especially keen to bolster his defensive options. Newcastle have been strongly linked with Lille centre-back Sven Botman and Burnley’s James Tarkowski.

The north east club lack depth up top, however, with Lyon hitman Dembele a January target, claim the Daily Mail.

The 25-year-old joined the Ligue 1 giants in 2018 for £20million following a terrific spell in Scotland with Celtic.

He was loaned out to Atletico Madrid for the second half of last season, with the Spaniards reportedly turning down the opportunity to sign him permanently for £30m.

Dembele has scored 49 times in 120 appearances for Lyon and has endured a stop-start 2021/22 season due to injuries.

Newcastle’s current striker options are Callum Wilson, Joelinton and Dwight Gayle. Due to Wilson’s injury record, bringing in a new striker could be a priority next month.

The Geordies have also been heavily linked with Atletico and England right-back Kieran Trippier.

The Daily Mail are reporting that Diego Simeone is willing to let Trippier leave the club in January on two conditions.

One is that if Atletico receive an offer of £15m, with the other being that they find a replacement for Trippier before the close of the transfer window.

Last week, Gabby Agbonlahor claimed that Wilson “would love” to play alongside the former Tottenham defender.

“I’m sure Callum Wilson would love the service that Trippier can bring,” the ex-Aston Villa forward told Football Insider.

“That would be a great signing if they can get that done.”
