Player reveals he ‘thought about’ Newcastle move to ‘secure his family’

Inter Milan defender Robin Gosens has revealed that he “thought about” joining Newcastle in January as by doing so he could have “secured a few more generations of his family”.

The Germany international was linked with a move to Newcastle during the January transfer window.

This did not end up coming to fruition as he left Atalanta to join Inter Milan. The Italian giants signed him on loan but the deal for him includes an obligation to buy.

The left-back has been capped 13 times for Germany since 2020 and he was integral for Atalanta prior to his move to Inter Milan.

Newcastle ended up signing Matt Targett, Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes and Chris Wood in January.

Gosens has been asked about Newcastle’s interest in him (via Sport Witness). He believes that it is “human” to think about such a transfer:

“I thought about it, but I never really considered a change. I find it very human to think about it. If you can earn multiple amounts for the same job in a different location?

“Show me someone who just says ‘no, thank you’. It’s not just about me, I could probably have secured a few more generations of my family with this money.”

Elsewhere, Robbie Fowler has praised Newcastle United and Eddie Howe for being “pragmatic” during the January transfer window with their five signings.

“They have done some good business. Why? Well, yes they’ve spent a lot of money, but I reckon they’ve used it pretty wisely under the circumstances.

“They’ve tried not to gamble too much, bringing in players with real Premier League experience. Again, that doesn’t always work, because players can go from one club to another and not fit in.

“But I’d applaud Eddie Howe. It strikes me that he’s been pragmatic in this window. He could have gone and bought some big names, some flashy foreign signings who would excite the fans.

“And he could have gone out and bought the typical player he produced at Bournemouth, to play a passing game based on patience and build-up. Let’s get real, though, they’re in a terrible position.

“And right now, Newcastle need players who can scrape out results.”
