Player ‘tempted’ by Tottenham move as he rejected two Serie A clubs

According to reports, Sofyan Amrabat was ‘tempted’ by a move to Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window.

The Fiorentina midfielder was linked with a move to Tottenham towards the end of the winter transfer window.

An initial loan deal with an option to buy was mentioned as Spurs and Fiorentina held talks.

The 25-year-old joined Fiorentina in 2020. He has previously had spells at Feyenoord and Club Brugge.

Amrabat has only started once in Serie A this season but he was a key player for Morocco at the African Cup of Nations. (via Sport Witness) are reporting that the player rejected Cagliari and Genoa in January. It is said that the two clubs ‘weren’t considered attractive enough’ for him.

It is suggested that Amrabat was ‘tempted’ by Tottenham and he would have ‘jumped at’ the opportunity to join them.

Tottenham did not end up signing Amrabat, but they brought in Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus.

Elsewhere, Neil Warnock reckons the defenders he had during his time at Middlesbrough were better “by a mile” than the current Spurs centre-backs.

Tottenham lost their third game on the bounce in the Premier League as they were soundly beaten 2-0 at home to Wolves on Sunday.

The defeat saw Spurs drop down to eighth in the standings with Bruno Lage’s men leapfrogging them into seventh.

Antonio Conte’s men still have games in hand on some of the teams above them but they are now five points off fourth-placed West Ham, who occupy the final Champions League spot.

The Spurs defence has come under particular scutiny in recent weeks with Jermaine Jenas picking out Davinson Sanchez for criticism yesterday.

And former Sheffield United boss Warnock – who was in charge of Middlesbrough earlier in the season – thinks some of his former players at the Riverside are miles better than the ones at Tottenham.

Warnock told talkSPORT: “I don’t think he [Antonio Conte] realised how difficult this job is. For the last two or three years, I’ve never thought any of the centre-halves are any good.

“I’ve watched them play. I keep on about my Middlesbrough lads. They’re better than any of these Tottenham centre-halves by a mile! They know what they’re doing! These teams don’t know what they’re doing at the back.”
