Pundit calls for Liverpool to sign ‘top-class’ Prem star over Bellingham

Ex-Premier League striker Kevin Phillips has called for Liverpool to sign Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips over Jude Bellingham.

Both Phillips and Bellingham feature for England and they have been linked with big transfers in recent months.

Phillips has struggled with injuries this term but he has enjoyed a stellar couple of seasons as Leeds have returned to the Premier League.

Bellingham meanwhile has made a name for himself in the Bundesliga and Champions League with Borussia Dortmund.

They signed him for £25m plus add-ons from Birmingham City last year and he is now said to be rated at around £90m.

As quoted by Football Insider, Phillips has suggested that the Leeds star could “play in any side in the world”:

“I’ve said on record that Kalvin Phillips could play in any side in the world,” Phillips said

“He’s so good in that role in front of the defence. Breaking up play, hitting diagonal passes and running with the ball.

“He would naturally slot into that Liverpool side, I’m sure.

“If I am picking between Jude Bellingham, who’s been linked with Liverpool, and him, I would pick Phillips. He’s a bit older but I think he’s a top-class player.”

In October, Paul Merson said he believed that Leeds midfielder Phillips would suit Liverpool over Man Utd:

“If he goes to Anfield he will still be remembered as a Leeds United hero. But if he goes to Old Trafford that all goes out the window,” Merson said.

“And a Leeds United player going to Manchester United? Wow. Better start well! That’s pressure.

“I think he plays every week for either club, personally. But I don’t think it will just be those two teams after him.

“With Phillips, I think he’d suit Liverpool more than United. And if they are paying big money for him I don’t see Jordan Henderson playing every week.

“I’m not saying that would be the end of Henderson. He’s a good pro. Never lets you down. But he’s not getting any younger.

“I think Phillips could learn from having him around. I think Phillips would become a much better player at Liverpool.

“At Leeds he will get burnt out. I think he’s virtually left on his own too much in midfield at Leeds and he has to do everything.

“It won’t be like that for him at Liverpool. But at United? Who knows? United’s midfield is a problem.”
