Pundit claims Man Utd ‘will win trophies’ if they appoint Poch

Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips claims Man Utd “will win trophies” if they appoint Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino in the summer.

The Red Devils have struggled to reach the standards they set under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who left the club in 2013 after winning the Premier League in his final season.

Since then, Man Utd have gone through numerous managers in an effort to bring glory back to the club but they are yet to manage a proper title challenge in the nine years post-Fergie.

Ralf Rangnick was appointed at the end of November as the interim boss until the end of the season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked by the Man Utd board.

Results have been decent under Rangnick but the performances have still been poor with United knocked out of the FA Cup to Championship side Middlesbrough on Friday.

There has been plenty of speculation as to who could take over from Rangnick – who will move into a two-year consultancy role – in the summer with Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag and Pochettino the main names on people’s lips.

And Phillips – who once scored 30 goals in a single Premier League season – reckons Pochettino would be successful at Man Utd with the hierarchy allowing him to spend a lot of money.

“I don’t know where I sit with it,” Phillips told Football Insider.

“The Premier League is a completely different ball game. United have been used to winning trophies, but not so much of late.

“The obvious accusation is that he never won any trophies at Tottenham, but he did mould them into a good side.

“I think he would have big funds to go out and sign the players he wanted. At Spurs, he didn’t have that because of the money spent on the stadium.

“He can clearly get the best out of players, we saw that at Spurs. When you do that at United and the players you can bring in, they will win trophies.

“When you consider his style of play as well, it makes sense to me.”
