Former England international Danny Mills predicts there will be an “interesting dynamic” between Ralf Rangnick and Cristiano Ronaldo when the former RB Leipzig boss arrives at Man Utd.
Rangnick’s arrival at Old Trafford is understood to be imminent with widespread reports claiming he has agreed to join as new interim boss after Lokomotiv Moscow allowed him to leave.
Michael Carrick is currently in caretaker charge of the team – leading them to a 2-0 victory over Villarreal on Tuesday night – and Rangnick is expected to take over from the former England international in the near future before Man Utd move to appoint a permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the summer.
Man Utd are mirroring history, Rangnick to drop Ronaldo and…
Solskjaer had led Man Utd to five losses in their last seven Premier League matches and had only won three of his last 11 fixtures in charge in all competitions.
A 4-1 loss to Watford last Saturday was the final straw as the Red Devils hierarchy chose to sack the Norwegian on Sunday.
Paul Merson claimed recently that Solskjaer’s plans were “thrown out of the window” when Ronaldo arrived from Juventus in the summer transfer window.
The former Arsenal midfielder claimed that the presence of Ronaldo has taken away the Red Devils’ ability to hit other sides on the counter-attack and Mills reckons there could be more trouble ahead as Ronaldo struggles to fit into Rangnick’s system.
“It’s going to be really interesting because Ralf Rangnick likes to control the whole football club,” Mills told Football Insider.
“We saw what he built at RB Leipzig from the ground up. Control of coaching and recruitment was down to him. It’s his way or the highway.
“It’s going to be interesting to see how he deals with the dynamics with influential, big ego players.
“He loves to play the high-press, he loves to get the ball back as quickly as possible. How do you fit Cristiano Ronaldo into that system?
“Somebody is going to have to compromise. That hasn’t really been Rangnick’s way up to that point.
“We know Ronaldo is an unbelievable goalscorer but if you’re looking at what is best for the team, then it’s going to be an interesting dynamic.”
