Chelsea star Timo Werner has reportedly emerged as a transfer ‘candidate’ for Manchester United, as Ralf Rangick’s ‘blind trust’ in the ‘sensible’ striker has been revealed.
Rangnick will take charge of United until the end of the season after the clash with Arsenal on Thursday, before moving into a consultancy role with the club.
The German’s move has led to various rumours as to who the club will sign in the future, with many of his former players linked.
RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara has been mooted as a January target, and former teammate Werner has now been added to the list.
Werner has struggled for form at Chelsea following his £47million move from Leipzig in the summer of 2020, scoring just 15 goals in 64 appearances for the club.
And SportBild (via Sport Witness) claim the German international ‘will be a candidate’ for United next summer.
Rangnick signed Werner for Leipzig in 2016 and the striker notched 16 goals and 12 assists under his stewardship in the 2018-19 season, before nearly doubling that goal tally the season after.
The report states that the new United boss ‘trusts the sensible striker blindly’.
It’s also claimed that Rangnick was keen on signing Erling Haaland for Leipzig, before he opted for Borussia Dortmund, and the striker could be an option for United next summer as Rangnick has ‘close ties’ with his father.
Meanwhile, Micah Richards claims there’s been a “massive overreaction” to Rangnick’s imminent arrival at United.
“You know why I’m groaning? I’ll tell you why I’m groaning!.
“Everyone’s making out like Rangnick is some sort of messiah like he’s come to this country and he’s got five league titles and a Champions League!
“It’s a massive, massive overreaction.”
When asked whether he’s among those doubting Rangnick due to his lack of Premier League experience, Richards added:
“No, no, no! I’m definitely not that. You’ve always got to give someone a chance and time.
“I’m just talking about everyone jumping on the bandwagon like he’s the messiah.”
Richards also raised doubts regarding United’s plan for Rangnick.
“Who is going to be the manager? We’re talking about Rangnick because he’s got the consultancy after the six months.
“I get him coming to Manchester United and I actually think it’s really good for United to have a clear plan as to what they want to do, the style of play, the players that they’ll want to attract if that’s what he wants to do. So I get that part.
“But I don’t get the part that he’s coming in there for six months then someone is coming in as he takes a step back. I don’t get that.
“Who is he going to get in there?”
