Rangnick in frame for permanent job as Man Utd put search ‘on hold’

The board at Man Utd have been so impressed with Ralf Rangnick’s start to life at Old Trafford that they have put their search for a new permanent manager on pause, according to reports.

Rangnick became interim boss at the end of November after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked following a poor start to the new Premier League season.

The German has won six out of his ten matches in charge so far and Man Utd have been victorious in five of their eight Premier League games under his stewardship.

Despite decent results, which have seen them climb into fourth in the Premier League and into the fourth round of the FA Cup, the performances under Rangnick have been poor in the main.

However, The Sun are claiming that Man Utd ‘have put their hunt for a new boss on hold’ with Rangnick said to be ‘impressing’ the board at Old Trafford.

The Man Utd hierarchy have been most impressed that Rangnick has ‘steadied the ship against a troubled backdrop’ and they ‘are interested to see what he can achieve between now and the end of the season’.

The report suggests that Champions League qualification would ‘go a long way to securing him the United job on a permanent basis for the next two years’.

Rangnick has managed to ‘unite what was a divided camp’ and has ‘dealt well with some of the egos at the club with his public statements’.

One man that has come under heavy criticism in recent weeks is Man Utd skipper Harry Maguire but Rangnick praised him following their 1-0 win over West Ham for putting in a performance befitting the captain’s armband.

After beating David Moyes’ side over the weekend, Rangnick said: “It was a very good performance from both centre-backs. Defensively almost without any mistake.

“On the ball, some long balls in the first half, two or three of them, that they would not have necessarily played.

“But, as I said, defensively he was very present. He was vocal on the pitch. He played like a captain should play.”
