Rangnick offers promising update as ’25 Man Utd players train’

Ralf Rangnick has offered an update on Manchester United’s Covid-19 situation and he has confirmed that 25 players trained on Thursday.

Man Utd have not played since December 11. This was when they travelled to face Norwich in Rangnick’s third game in charge.

The interim boss has won both of his Premier League games at United 1-0. Under him, they drew 1-1 against Young Boys in their final Champions League group tie.

United were scheduled to face Brentford and Brighton in the league but both games were called off due to Covid-19.

The Red Devils were affected by the virus but their training ground reopened on Tuesday and they have now trained for three straight days.

They are back in action on Monday as they come up against Newcastle at St James’ Park. As quoted by BBC Sport, Rangnick has revealed that his returning players are in “good shape”:

“We had our last training session last week on Thursday. On that day we had eight outfield players and three goalkeepers.

“Then we closed the training ground for four days in order to stop the chain. Today was the third day of training this week and we had 25 field players, apart from Paul Pogba (injury).

“He is the only one missing, otherwise everyone is on board so the development since last week is good.

“They [the players] are all in good shape. The players have done their homework and they all had their schedules to train at home.

“They have stuck to it from what I have seen in training. Most of them, if not all, are available. Of course, I will have to make some difficult decisions as to who will start.”

Rangnick went onto reveal that United “have a high record of vaccinated players”:

“The Premier League will try everything to keep the league safe, to keep the situation around the players safe, the club – and we do that regularly – we have to encourage players to behave in a disciplined way with regard to [social] contacts, we also need to make sure we have most of the players vaccinated.

“As far as I know, we have a high record of vaccinated players, here in our club. But, still the past weeks have shown if you are vaccinated two or three times, you can still catch the virus, especially the new virus.

“You are not being protected but at least you are being protected from severe symptoms and, as far as I know, most of our players who tested positive had very, very weak symptoms and didn’t suffer from that.”

Rangnick has also called for the future of the League Cup to be discussed and for five substitutes to be implemented in the Premier League.
