Rangnick tells Manchester United to learn from Pogba mistake

Ralf Rangnick wants Manchester United to learn from their mistake over the treatment of Paul Pogba.

After sustaining a thigh injury on international duty with France in November, Pogba was expected to be sidelined for 12 weeks.

As part of his rehabilitation from the issue, the midfielder was allowed to travel to Dubai to benefit from the warm weather conditions.

But Rangnick, who has spoken over the phone with the 28-year-old for no more than a quarter of an hour, says that will no longer be permitted in the future on his watch.

“As far as I can tell the medical department is really very good, with many different approaches towards rehab,” he said. “I would not want players to do their rehab abroad or anywhere else – the decision on Paul was taken before I came.

“My former clubs were always trying to make sure the rehab should take place in the club itself.

“I have already spoken to the medical department – to Steve [McNally] our doctor, to Robin Sadler [head of rehab] – that in the future I want players with injuries to stay here.

“Hopefully we don’t get long-term injuries, but if we have them in the future I want them to stay.”

Pogba’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain, with his contract expiring in the summer and a handful of clubs monitoring the situation.

Rangnick would prefer for Pogba to stay, but will not go out of his way to persuade him.

“Players have to want to stay and play for the club,” he said.

“For a big club like Manchester United, if a player does not want to play for a club like Manchester United, even in the long term, I don’t think it makes sense to convince him to change his mind.

“This is such a massive club, such fantastic support, I don’t think that anyone in the club should then try to convince the player to stay.

“But on the other hand, let’s wait and see. I’ve spoken with him for 15 minutes over the phone a few days ago. Let’s have him come back, get fully fit, train with the team and then we will see where we stand (and) how the team has developed by then.

“He can be an important player, I’m fully aware of that, but this is true for all the other players that we have.

“I’m not only the coach of Paul Pogba once he’s fully fit, I’m also the coach of all the other players and my ambition is to make them better, to develop each individual player, and this is only possible by improving the performance of the whole team.”
