Redknapp identifies Man Utd star as Newcastle’s ideal first January buy

Jamie Redknapp has encouraged Newcastle United to bring in Manchester United star Jesse Lingard as their “first signing” in January.

Lingard had a fruitful spell on loan at West Ham United last season. He was expected to seal a permanent move away from Man Utd this summer, but he ended up staying at his boyhood club.

The Englishman has barely featured this term as he has only started twice across all competitions. He is out of contract at the end of this season.

Newcastle find the gulf between them and Man City is too great

Newcastle are expected to be busy in the January transfer window. They currently sit 19th in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s side have only won once this season as they have ten points from their 18 outings.

It has been reported that Man Utd want a transfer fee for Lingard, so a January exit is on the cards.

Redknapp has told Sky Sports that Newcastle will be able to get Lingard “at a good price”:

“You can’t just keep relying on Callum Wilson,” Redknapp said.

“Jesse Lingard has had a shout, if I was Newcastle right now he would be my first signing.

”He’s out of contract in the summer, you can get him at a good price. Great mentality, there’s definitely goals in him.”

Speaking last week, Tony Cascarino suggested that Lingard would be a “good signing” for Newcastle:

“It looks like he was misled. They didn’t have the greatest start to the season where you can go ‘well, you can’t get into the team’. There have been some down times at Man United and he deserved an opportunity,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.

“Jesse needs to play football. He is 28-years-old. He has had a decent career, but not quite got over the line at United. Go out on loan again if he has to and prove what his worth is because they might want to do a permanent.

“It’s a good signing for Newcastle, I believe, and for him – I think Newcastle need more goals from other areas and Jesse could provide that and he can provide assists because they can’t keep relying on Calum Wilson.

“If West Ham come in for him: Then he has a choice. But don’t make it on money. Whatever move he takes, he will get well paid. Whether it’s West Ham or Newcastle. Make the career. The advantage West Ham have is that he knows the manager.”
