Ralf Rangnick was only persuaded to take the Man Utd job when they offered him a consultancy role past the end of the season, according to reports.
The head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow has reportedly accepted an offer from the Red Devils to take over as manager until the end of the 2021/22 season.
Rangnick brings a wealth of experience with him having managed multiple clubs in a managerial career spanning 38 years.
Big Weekend: Chelsea v Man Utd, Toney, Bielsa, Arsenal
Michael Carrick has been in charge of Man Utd since the club decided to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday and will be in the dugout when they face Chelsea this weekend.
But it now seems clear that Rangnick will take over until the end of the season in an interim role before helping the club appoint Solskjaer’s permanent successor in the summer.
And now ESPN claims that Man Utd ‘ditched plans to give caretaker Michael Carrick as many as six more games in charge’ with Rangnick emerging ‘as the outstanding candidate during interviews’.
It is believed that former Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde and Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui were both ‘contacted’ as they looked for an interim boss.
ESPN claim sources have told them that Rangnick ‘initially distanced himself from the idea he could be interested in a job at United, but a breakthrough came when a consultancy role was offered as part of the deal’.
The report adds:
‘The club’s initial choice for the permanent position is Mauricio Pochettino, but that decision was made before Rangnick’s arrival. The terms of Rangnick’s advisory role after the interim management job ends have not been made clear but sources added he is expected to play a leading role in choosing a permanent successor to Solskjaer.’
Carrick won his only match in charge so far 2-0 at Villarreal and David de Gea thought Man Utd showed “good team spirit” in Spain on Tuesday night.
“Yeah, it’s always great to play in Spain, especially a Champions League game, good atmosphere,” De Gea said.
“I think it was a massive three points for us today. Especially after a couple of tough weeks, so yeah, I think we showed good team spirit today. We play against a very difficult team, they play really well and I think what we showed today… I’m very proud of the team, the staff, so I’m very happy today.”
