Richards calls out ‘absolutely ridiculous’ use of Man Utd star

After their loss against Wolves on Monday Night, Micah Richards questioned Ralf Rangnick’s use of Manchester United star Jadon Sancho.

The winger made the move to Man Utd during the summer from Borussia Dortmund. They paid a fee in the region of £73m to sign him.

The 21-year-old was involved in 19 goals from his 26 Bundesliga outings for Dortmund in 2020/21. He also featured for England at last year’s European Championships.

Sancho has struggled so far this term as he has only netted twice from his 22 appearances across all competitions.

The Englishman has featured prominently under United’s new interim boss Rangnick. He has been operated in a supporting role as part of the German’s 4-2-2-2 formation.

Man Utd struggled on Monday night as they were beaten by Wolves. Joao Moutinho scored a late winner for Bruno Lage’s side.

Richards does not believe Sancho is being played in his best position:

“We have seen Sancho trying to get the ball in the No.10 position on the half turn, when all the evidence that we have seen with Sancho is that he is good on one-on-ones,” Richards told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He is good at starting on one side and making forward runs into the box. But now he is on the half turn, getting the ball, and what is even worse is that when the opposition full-backs are pushing forward he is in a wing-back role.

“It is absolutely ridiculous – they are just getting forced back.

“When they want to start attacks they are already 20 yards back from where they need to be.

“I think Rangnick can do good, he just needs to find the right system.”

Elsewhere, Rio Ferdinand has heaped praise on Man Utd defender Phil Jones:

“For someone to come in from the cold like that, you have to tip your hat to someone like that,” Ferdinand said.

“They’re playing him maybe to put him in the shop window, first and foremost, but if he plays well enough the manager might change his mind. That can happen in football very quickly.

“I’m just pleased he got through the game unscathed, no injuries. He put in a decent performance after such a long time out, not easy to do. So you’ve got to tilt your hat to Phil Jones.

“He’s come in for a lot of stick, a lot of my words have been misinterpreted a little bit. But you’ve got to say, ‘well done’ in terms of the amount of time he’s been off the pitch, to come in and play in the Premier League and play at the standard he did today.

“Albeit, his header was the one that fell to Moutinho’s foot before he scored but I thought he was class for long periods in the game.”
