Richards: Lampard can guide Alli back into England squad

Micah Richards believes playing under Frank Lampard at Everton can help Dele Alli break back into the England squad.

The England international made the switch to Goodison Park on deadline day for a fee that could rise up to £40m.

Lampard, who was appointed as the new Toffees manager on the same day as Alli joined the club, was a key factor in getting the player through the door.

The 25-year-old has struggled at Spurs in recent seasons after an amazing start to life in north London back in 2015.

Alli was named Young Player of the Year in both 2015/16 and 16/17 after scoring 28 Premier League goals across both seasons.

His disappointing form has resulted in the player falling out of favour at Spurs as well as with the England national team.

Alli has 37 caps for his country but has not made an appearance for the Three Lions since the Nations League third-place playoff win against Switzerland in 2019.

"Dele needed to have another experience, I want to thank him for the time we worked together."

However, former England man Richards believes the midfielder can reignite his career under Lampard’s guidance at Everton.

Richards wrote for the Daily Mail: “My hopes that he would get back to the levels I know he can reach were boosted on Monday. Of all the deals that were done in the hours before the transfer window closed, none excited me more than Dele joining Everton. What an opportunity this is — he must grab it with both hands.

“There are no excuses now. Frank Lampard has shown a huge amount of faith, offering him a chance at a club with a great pedigree, and he will be such a positive influence. Few were better at scoring from midfield than Everton’s new manager and Dele must learn from him every day.

“If he does that, I don’t think his dreams of playing for England again are over.

“Let me stress this point: I’m not saying that leaving Spurs suddenly means Gareth Southgate will be on the phone to him and asking about his availability for the March friendlies against Switzerland and the Ivory Coast. Dele has been out of the picture for a long time.

“What I am saying, however, is that he has the talent to get back into contention down the line. Yes, Dele has had a disappointing couple of years but let’s not forget the impact he had in the team Mauricio Pochettino took to the Champions League final in 2019.

“He can be a big player once again. It’s time for Dele to deliver.”
