‘Saga almost over’ – Alli nears Everton move despite Newcastle interest

According to reports, Dele Alli will be confirmed as an Everton player “in the coming hours” despite a late bid from Newcastle.

The Tottenham midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park all month.

However, Everton made a move for the 25-year-old on deadline day, shortly after the Toffees confirmed Frank Lampard as their new manager.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed that a deal for Alli could cost Everton €40m (£33.3m) depending on Alli and the club’s performances.

It’s an initial free transfer with ‘€12m after 20 games and bonuses for next years’.

However, The Athletic journalist David Ornstein then claimed that Newcastle made a ‘dramatic late attempt to pip’ Everton to the Tottenham midfielder’s signature.

It is ‘unclear whether their late move will be successful’ with the Geordies proposing ‘a loan deal’ to beat Everton to his signing.

Since then, Romano has provided another update, saying that ‘no other clubs are jumping into the deal’.

Another player Newcastle will not sign before the transfer window closes on Monday night is Man Utd midfielder Jesse Lingard.

Lingard will not be allowed to leave Old Trafford this month, as per Ornstein, despite interim manager Ralf Rangnick giving the 29-year-old his blessing to leave on a temporary basis.

Ornstein wrote for The Athletic: “Jesse Lingard has been told by Manchester United he will not be able to leave ahead of tonight’s deadline.

The Athletic reported earlier on Monday that Ralf Rangnick had given Lingard his blessing to leave on loan.”
