Paul Scholes has changed his Premier League title prediction, now believing that Chelsea can come out on top for the first time since 2016.
The former Man Utd midfielder originally predicted a two-horse race between current champions Man City and 2019/20 winners Liverpool.
Furthermore, Scholes said that he was “not convinced” by the Blues in the title race against City and the Reds.
“I think Chelsea have got the manager to challenge. I’m just not sure, not convinced there’s enough goals in the team,” he said.
“I think Romelu Lukaku will score goals but are there enough people around him to score goals. I’m not sure Timo Werner will. When he plays for Germany he scores every game, for Chelsea he misses a lot of chances.
“I also don’t think Chelsea are great defensively. [Antonio] Rudiger has been really good but other than that, Thiago Silva is 36, he’s not going to play every game.”
However, Scholes has changed his opinion, emphasising the importance of Romelu Lukaku in Chelsea’s quest for the league title this campaign.
“I think Lukaku is a big difference to him [Tuchel]. They need to get him fit, if he can play the rest of the games this season, they are going to have a great chance,” he told Premier League Productions.
“I really didn’t fancy Chelsea at the start of the season. I’m not sure why looking [back] now.
“Look at that coach, the way he speaks, the way he coaches his team. They are well-drilled, they are confident, everyone knows what they are doing.”
Meanwhile, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was critical of Timo Werner on Sunday after the Chelsea striker put in a “poor” performance against Manchester United.
When asked what he made of Werner’s display, Hasselbaink replied on Sky Sports: “Poor, poor.
“With the ball, without the ball, he was poor today. Normally he is really sharp with his runs but it was poor.
“At the end of the day, you’re a No. 9 so you’re going to be judged on the opportunities you get and what you do with it. It wasn’t good enough.
“He needs to score those chances. He keeps missing big chances, big opportunities. He needs to put them away.”
