Scholes predicts two-horse title race after Man Utd mauling

Paul Scholes claims defending champions Manchester City will be “frightened” of Liverpool after they thrashed Manchester United 5-0 at Old Trafford.

Chelsea top the Premier League after nine games, and they look set to break away from the chasing pack along with Liverpool in second and Manchester City in third.

But Scholes believes Thomas Tuchel’s side will fall away, claiming it will be a two-horse race between City and Liverpool.

The former United midfielder claims the Reds’ victory at Old Trafford was “devastating”.

“I think it’s a devastating day for the Premier League,” Scholes said. “Seeing Liverpool go to Old Trafford and win so convincingly, I think it will make City worry.

“Chelsea… I’m not sure, they have been great and I think they are better than I actually give them credit for but I think it’s between Liverpool and Manchester City.

“I think City watching that today, in the Champions League or the Premier League, that will frighten them.”

Liverpool are the only unbeaten team left in the Premier League, though they have drawn with Chelsea, City and Brentford, with the win over United marking Klopp’s 200th win as manager of the Anfield club.

Scholes was very critical of the United display on Sunday and accused one player of “cheating”.

“Tactically it was bad today, really bad,” Scholes said. “But on the other side of that players have got to have some kind of common sense as well.

“You think about Mason [Greenwood] in that first instance going to close him down, that was almost cheating.

“He knew he wasn’t going to get the ball and he knew it looks like he was going to close him down but he knew he was just going to pass it and he can’t do anything.

“It’s almost a cheating way of sprinting to him, they pass it and then he has a little walk back because he thought, ‘I’ve done my bit’. But he hasn’t done his bit, he’s ruined the whole team, all the team get pulled out of position, [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka has to come out, [Victor] Lindelof ends up at right-back, then there’s all of the space in the middle.

“All of a sudden, from Mason not doing his job properly, the team attacking, Salah played Keita in, he could’ve played Alexander-Arnold in, he could’ve played Robertson in. It was ridiculous the way it happened, sometimes players have got to use their common sense.”
