Spurs, Newcastle set to hijack Barcelona move for ex-Chelsea man

Tottenham and Newcastle are set to make a move for Juventus forward Alvaro Morata amid interest from Barcelona, according to reports.

Morata is currently on-loan with the Italian giants from Spanish champions Atletico Madrid but looks set to leave the club this month.

Juve are on the verge of completing the signing of Fiorentina forward Dusan Vlahovic, meaning that Morata would likely find it hard to gain regular minutes.

Barcelona are thought to be interested in the Spaniard with new boss Xavi looking to bring in a new forward after losing Sergio Aguero to retirement earlier this season due to heart complications.

Summer signing Memphis Depay has struggled for fitness since his arrival and Luuk de Jong is clearly short-term fix.

However, Spanish outlet El Patizado de Cope (via The Daily Star) is now reporting that Tottenham and Newcastle have made a late bid to bring the forward back to the Premier League.

Morata previously played for Chelsea between 2017 and 2019 but struggled to make an impact, scoring just 16 goals in 47 Premier League games.

The approaches from Spurs and Newcastle are thought to be loan offers and whilst Atletico would prefer to sell the forward permanently, a move to the Premier League and not to a divisional rival could benefit them.

Newcastle have been linked with numerous players so far this transfer window as they look to use their new-found riches to fight off relegation.

Atletico right-back Kieran Trippier has already been brought in as has Burnley forward Chris Wood. Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes looks set to be the next name through the door.

Spurs on the other hand, have found it tough to bring in squad reinforcements as they look to back Antonio Conte.

Wolves winger Adama Traore was heavily linked but now looks to be edging closer to a move to his former club Barcelona. Porto star Luis Diaz was also wanted by Spurs but they look to have been overtaken by Liverpool in the race for the Colombian.

If Spurs are to bring Morata into the club, he would likely feature as a back-up option to Harry Kane.
