Tottenham’s Europa Conference League clash with Rennes that was postponed on Thursday evening will not be rescheduled, UEFA have confirmed.
The fixture was due to take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday with Spurs needing a win to qualify for the knockout-stages. Rennes have already qualified as group winners.
A Covid-19 breakout in the Spurs camp was the reasoning behind the cancellation with Antonio Conte unable to name a squad for the game.
The Champions League group stage is ruined and cannot be saved
The game was expected to be arranged in the coming weeks but with the busy Premier League schedule around the festive period, the clubs were unable to agree on a date. UEFA rules state that game would’ve had to have been played before the 31st of December.
Spurs still have four Premier League fixtures to play this month, as well as a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash with West Ham.
A UEFA statement read: “Following a COVID-19 outbreak in the team of Tottenham Hotspur FC ahead of the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage match against Stade Rennais FC, scheduled to take place on 9 December 2021 in London, the match could not take place.
“In accordance with Annex J of the UEFA Europa Conference League regulations, UEFA, in cooperation with the two clubs tried to find a viable solution in order to reschedule the match, so as to ensure the group stage could be completed accordingly.
“Unfortunately, despite all efforts, a solution that could work for both clubs could not be found.
“As a consequence, the match can no longer be played and the matter will, therefore, be referred to the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body for a decision to be taken in accordance with Annex J of the above-mentioned competition regulations.”
The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will investigate if Spurs had 13 outfield payers and a goalkeeper, the minimum a side must have available for a game to be played.
A similar situation was found in the Nations League, where Switzerland were given a 3-0 win after Ukraine were unable to fulfil a fixture, again due to Covid.
Spurs’ Premier League fixture against Brighton this weekend has also be postponed.
