Ten Hag should only keep five Man Utd players – former defender

Mikael Silvestre has named the five players he thinks are safe from being sold by incoming Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils were brushed aside by Liverpool on Tuesday night, leaving their top-four hopes in tatters.

It has been a difficult campaign for the Manchester club, who are facing their fifth trophyless season in a row.

Ralf Rangnick replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in December and will step into a two-year consultancy role in the summer, clearing the way for a new manager to come in.

Multiple reports suggest that Ajax boss Ten Hag will be Solskjaer’s long-term replacement. The 52-year-old has won four major trophies with the Eredivisie giants.

The Dutchman has a big job ahead and is likely to be very busy in the summer transfer window.

While incoming signings are guaranteed, the club’s former defender, Silvestre, insists Ten Hag will not be able to get the squad he wants from one window.

He told Sky Sports News (via the Express): “Well first of all in one window you can’t sign ten players, it doesn’t make sense. So it’s going to take two or three windows, and I’m talking summer windows, to really adjust the squad to reflect what the new manager wants.”

Silvestre sees a big squad overhaul coming at Old Trafford, saying that only five current players should make the grade for Ten Hag.

“And for the ones that need to stay for sure, I would say the backbone of the team,” he added. “Bruno Fernandes signed a new contract, so he’s one that needs to stay.

“David de Gea, Raphael Varane who we haven’t seen much of this season, Harry Maguire needs to improve. I think he’s a good leader, he’s having a difficult time at the moment, but he needs to stick to United and work hard to go back to his best.

“And I would say Marcus Rashford would need to stay as well. Those guys I think have got United in their heart but for the rest I think there is questions marks for all of them.”
