Tuchel: Chelsea must be prepared for ‘tough’ winter schedule

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has told his players to be ready for a “tough” winter period.

The Blues are currently top of the Premier League table after 11 games, three points ahead of Manchester City in second.

In their last match, Tuchel’s side were surprisingly held by Burnley at Stamford Bridge, drawing 1-1.

Every Premier League club’s player of the season so far…

Despite this, Chelsea have not lost in eight matches and will be high on confidence despite the dropped points against the Clarets.

However, with the gruelling winter period coming up, Tuchel has given the players not involved in the international break “one week off completely” to “recharge the batteries”.

“Looking at the fixtures in December and January, it’s a lot,” the German told the club’s official website.

“The World Cup is coming and the international break travels so we decided here to give staff one week off completely and to give everybody the chance to recover also mentally and to recharge the batteries.

“December will be tough, January will be tough and it will continue like this so no more breaks [after that] and we want to push the team to the limit.

“That’s why we use the time now after the game to rest.”

Tuchel also admits he will use the break to spend time with his family.

“I have two lovely daughters who deserve my attention and time and it’s the best distraction to take care of them,” the 48-year-old added.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are reportedly planning to cut Saul Niguez’s loan spell short and send the midfielder back to Atletico Madrid in January.

Saul is said to be keen to remain and fight for his place under Tuchel, but Marca (via Metro) claim the decision will be taken out of his hands.

The Spaniard has started just one Premier League game, the season opener against Aston Villa, in which he was hooked at half-time.

He was handed a rare start in the Carabao Cup victory over Southampton last month, with Tuchel admitting surprise that Saul was able to handle the “intensity”, suggesting the midfielder was heading in the “right direction”.
