Watford have confirmed the signing of Nigeria international winger Samuel Kalu from Bordeaux.

The 24-year-old joins from the French outfit for an undisclosed fee believed to be worth around £3million.

He pens a contract lasting until 2025 and becomes the Hornets’ fourth signing of the January transfer window.

“Watford FC is delighted to announce the signing of Nigerian international winger Samuel Kalu on a deal until June 2025 from French club FC Girondins de Bordeaux,” a club statement read.

“The fourth new signing of the January window, Kalu joins full-back Hassane Kamara, central defender Samir and midfielder Edo Kayembe at Vicarage Road.”

Kalu spent three-and-a-half years at Bordeaux. He made 86 appearances for the Ligue 1 club, scoring ten and assisting eight.

He also enjoyed spells with Gent in Belgium and AS Trencin in Slovakia before moving to France.

The 24-year-old has 17 caps for Nigeria, scoring twice for his country. He was not included in the Super Eagles’ squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson insists he is “ready” to take on the “massive challenge” of keeping the Hornets in the Premier League.

Hodgson was announced as the club’s new manager on Tuesday evening following the departure of Claudio Ranieri after only 16 weeks in charge.

“It’s a massive challenge, but it’s a challenge I believe I’m ready to take on and one that I’m very excited about,” former England boss Hodgson said.

“I’m certainly looking forward to it, and if the players are as good as I think they can be, then I’m hopeful of helping the club to another season in the Premier League.

“I’m confident in the sense that I’ve been in situations that aren’t so different to this before, at Fulham, West Brom and Palace.

“The period of time I had to change things might have been a bit longer on each occasion – and at West Brom the league position wasn’t as bleak – but in terms of coming in, getting my ideas across and getting the team playing, it feels somewhat similar.

“It’s going to be a difficult job for Ray and I, as I’m sure it would be for anybody, but I feel we’ve got the ability to be successful.

“I can certainly assure all the Watford fans that our desire to keep the club in the league will be every bit as great as theirs, and we’ll do everything we can to make that happen.”
