Xavi admits Barca could ‘sell’ Man Utd, Newcastle target in January

Barcelona boss Xavi admits the Catalan club could have to “sell” reported Man Utd and Newcastle target Ousmane Dembele in the January transfer window.

Dembele is out of contract in the summer as has been linked with move to a number of clubs including Premier League sides Man Utd and Newcastle.

The winger has struggled ever since his move from Borussia Dortmund with a number of injuries thwarting his career development but is thought of highly by Barcelona boss Xavi and the clubs hierarchy.

Despite that, Xavi is getting frustrated about Dembele’s indecision over whether sign a new contract at the club or not with Barcelona now considering a January sale if he doesn’t commit.

Xavi told reporters: “We can’t wait for Ousmane. Or renews the contract or a solution to sell him must be found immediately. I don’t consider sending him to stands. He says he wants to stay but then he doesn’t sign.

“The message is clear. Ousmane Dembele has to sign a new contract or we find a way to sell him in January. No other way. I also wonder about agent is talking the way he is and Dembélé, on the other hand, telling me he wants to stay. I can’t understand.”

Reports a couple of days ago that Barcelona had given Dembele ’48 hours’ to decide his future now seem fairly accurate with the source insisting that Man Utd had been ‘increasing their pressure’ in ‘recent weeks’.

While Spanish newspaper Sport insisted yesterday that United’s Premier League rivals Newcastle are trying to ‘seduce him with an economically attractive proposal’.

Sport added that ‘contacts between Barca and the English team have already begun and both are interested in reaching an agreement before January 31’.
